Preparing Your Dog’s Overnight Bag: A Checklist

When you’re going on a short trip with your dog, you want to bring along everything they need without carrying too much. It can be tricky to decide what’s necessary and what’s not. Here’s a list of things to pack for your dog if you’re going on an overnight or weekend trip together.

Whether you’re going nearby or far away, there are some things you should always bring when you’re traveling with your pet. Keeping these items in your car means you’ll have less to pack for your trip!

The Right Bag

Choosing the right bag is important for any trip. Find one that’s spacious enough to hold all your dog’s stuff, so you can keep your hands free for your own bag and his leash!

For short trips, the Go Bag is perfect. Made specifically for traveling with pets, this bag is stylish and practical. It has a comfortable strap for wearing over your shoulder or across your body, and lots of pockets and compartments to keep your dog’s gear organized.

Walking Harnesses and Leashes

Dogs should always be secured in their car harnesses or carriers while you’re driving. But once you reach your destination, walking harnesses are more comfortable for them to explore in.

For enjoyable outings, we recommend the Freedom No-Pull Harnesses. These harnesses allow you to attach the leash at the back or chest, which helps discourage pulling. They’re also stylish and provide minimal coverage, so they won’t make your dog too hot. Our preferred leash can be adjusted from 3 to 5 feet in length. It also has a clasp in the handle, making it easy to attach your dog to a chair at an outdoor café or a bench in the park.

Treat Pouch and Extra Treats

Bringing your pet to new places is a good chance to train them! Whether it’s a trail where your pup can practice coming when called or a mall where they can learn to greet others nicely, be ready to reward them for good behavior. A treat pouch keeps their rewards nearby and your pockets clean.

Healthy treats like freeze-dried salmon will make your pup happy — and you won’t have to worry about giving them unhealthy snacks.

Food and Bowls

Traveling is simple when your furry friends eat The Honest Kitchen pet food! This natural, human-grade diet is dehydrated gently, so it’s lightweight and doesn’t take up much room. Measure your dog’s meals into separate plastic bags, then pour them into a collapsible travel bowl and add hot water when it’s mealtime. Remember to bring a spoon!

To keep active dogs entertained, mix the food, stuff it into a Tux toy, and freeze it overnight. This creates a healthy treat that will keep your dog occupied in the car!

Medications and Supplements

Always bring plenty of your dog’s medicine and supplements for the whole trip, plus a day or two extra. You never know if something unplanned will make your trip longer, so having extra medicine for your dog means you won’t have to worry.

If you’re going to a place where bugs might bother your dog, bring a natural repellent for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes to keep them safe.

Bedding

It’s important to ensure your pet has a cozy spot to sleep while you’re away. Some dogs like their own bed, while others prefer the sofa or sleeping with you. If your pup likes to cuddle up on furniture, bring along a sheet or blanket to cover it.

Entertaining Toys

When it’s time to unwind, having some calm toys for your dog is smart. If your dog enjoys chewing, bring a Toppl toy and bully sticks to keep him occupied. Putting the bully stick through the holes in the Toppl adds an extra challenge! Also, if your dog has a favorite stuffed toy, don’t forget to pack it.

Cleaning Supplies

Dogs can be messy, so it’s important to be ready to clean up after them. Pack essentials like paper towels, wet wipes, a lint roller, and a small spray bottle of carpet cleaner. Don’t forget to bring a towel for drying your dog if it rains.
